That's all for this morning!
We'll resume shooting after lunch!
(Our morning shoot's already over...)
(After lunch, we'll be doing that scene again.)
I'd try to rethink this scene with Reki Bakuno in mind.
(With those words in mind, I rewatched all the old footage I could.)
(Not just for this film...
I even asked Mr. Kato to send over footage of any of Bakuno's previous stage performances.)
(Unfortunately...
I still wasn't able to find an answer.)
(What are we missing?
What did he see...?)
<Rui, is something wrong?>
Rin...?
What brings you here?
<You haven't really slept since yesterday, so I came to see how you were doing.>
<Wait, those bags under your eyes!
You really should get some rest if you can!>
You got me.
But I'm okay.
More importantly, I need to figure out what we're missing.
There you are, Rui!
Oh, Rin's here as well.
All of you...
<Huh?
What's with the big bag, Tsukasa?>
Heh heh heh.
It's full of our lunches, including yours, Rui!
Oh, including me...?
We're heading over to the airport to shoot that scene again after lunch, right? So, we think you should eat while you can.
Having some yummy food should help you come up with really good ideas!
Which is why we brought you a hearty barbeque lunch! This was the last one they had, so you should consider yourself lucky!
Yes, I agree that I should provide myself with some nourishment. Thank you, everyone.
<Oh, you guys' lunches are all different!>
<Nene's got a Japanese-style lunch, Emu's looks Western, and Tsukasa's having some sandwiches!>
Hehe. It's so great how we get to choose our lunches like this!
Good point. Normally, you would expect them to provide the same meal for everyone.
But considering how many people are working on this film, there must be a wide range of preferences, and they've given us a few choices to meet everyone's needs!
To meet everyone's needs...
Oh, I just thought of something amazing!
Getting to choose our lunches is really nice!
But wouldn't it be even nicer if we could choose what's inside?!
What do you mean?
Take Rui's lunch for example. It's a big barbeque lunch that's chock-full of meat and vegetables, right?
But Rui hates vegetables.
So, wouldn't it make him happier if he were allowed to have no veggies?!
...!
As for me, I'd want to have lots and lots more veggies instead of meat!
It wouldn't be much of a “barbeque” lunch if you did that. Also, you're basically talking about a buffet.
(Individualized lunches based on each person's wants and needs...)
Now I see...
That's what we've been missing.
Rui?
Did you figure something out?
Yes.
I think I understand why that scene didn't go as well as planned.
<What?>
I need to go talk to Mr. Ohara.
The rest of you keep eating.
Hey, wait a—
*Sigh*
There he goes...
...is how I'd like you to do this scene now.
I see...
Pardon the interruption, you two.
You look like you're out of breath.
Is something wrong?
No, it's about that one scene.
I think I know what you need to do in order for it to go the way you want.
What...?!
You also had an idea?
Huh? Also?
Yes, I was just discussing my new plan for it with Bakuno.
It hit me last night. My friend said he'd rethink the scene to fit Reki Bakuno better, but I thought I'd been doing that up to this point.
But further editing what we had didn't give me the answer. Which meant that the problem didn't lie there.
The problem was the screenplay...
Looks like we landed on the same answer.
This screenplay is based on the original novel. As such, the lines for each character are more or less all taken straight from it.
Right. In particular, the climax scene is completely faithful to the dialogue in the book.
Exactly. Unfortunately, that dialogue is intended to have maximum impact when read as a part of a novel.
In other words...
It won't necessarily translate well over to film.
Yes, but... These lines aren't bad or anything. This scene still works with them in place.
We may not have run into any problems if we were working with a different cast. However...
Because Bakuno is playing Katsuyuki, there has to be a better way to do this scene.
Precisely.
So, as important as it is to stay faithful to the original story, the lines for this scene need to suit Bakuno's style better.
They need to be rewritten in order to allow him to put his skills to full use.
Oh...?
Haha. I see...
Even you decided to stop there.
Mr. Ohara?
That won't be enough, Kamishiro.
I'm thinking about going even further.
What...?
Credit where credit's due, you did better than most would in your situation. I commend you for that.
But I'd be out of a job if a filmmaking novice like you managed to come up with the same answer as me.
U-Um, so...
It's time to show all you youngsters.
You're going to see what Tomomi Ohara is really capable of.
